Eco Anxiety into Eco Optimism Inspiring Action & Holding Leaders Accountable
Concordia Live
May 30, 2023
Despite being the least responsible for climate change, today’s young people are most at risk from its impacts, an unfair inheritance that threatens their futures. The fear and worry that the climate crisis evokes is as real as its global impact—from floods, to droughts, to pollution. Eco-anxiety is driven by a range of factors, but many children and young people feel a dissatisfaction with the response to climate change from government and business leaders. Action must be taken by leaders to solve the climate crisis, to protect the futures and well-being of young people. This Concordia Live, held in partnership with UNICEF USA, will bring together youth advocates and other experts to discuss eco-anxiety and how to tap into eco-optimism through a powerful combination of advocacy, resilience-building, green skill-building, and youth voice, which can help turn despair into action and anxiety into momentum.

This is the Part Where We Fall Down: On climate grief and hope
Democracy & Belonging Forum event
with Naomi Klein, Bayo Akomolafe, and Yuria Celidwen
May 4, 2023

Join us for our next event in the ongoing series The Edges in the Middle, where OBI Global Senior Fellow Bayo Akomolafe will meet with celebrated Canadian author, professor, and social activist Naomi Klein; and, Dr. Yuria Celidwen, a scholar of Indigenous Nahua and Maya descent from the highlands of Chiapas (Mexico), Senior Fellow of OBI, and thinker whose work straddles the intersections between Indigenous studies, cultural psychology, and contemplative science. Together, we will explore the untrod path with feet unshod; we will construct a stranger thesis that calls into question – if only for a moment – the anthropocentricity of hope in becoming-responsive to explosive transformations. We will investigate the agency of grief, the invitation nestled within the idea that to stand a chance, we might need to fall.

Lyn Stoler | TEDxManhattanBeach
March 15, 2023

In her poignant talk turned hopeful, Liz Stoler shares how climate change is already impacting public health and a phenomenon in mental health called solastalgia, the distress that is produced by environmental change. She shares several community-based ideas to move us from climate pessimism to climate optimism. Lyn Stoler is a public health and climate researcher committed to nurturing and sustaining hope as we face the effects of climate change. She has traveled around the globe researching city-based climate solutions that improve public health as part of her new project, Parachute. Investigating how cities in the United States and around the world become more beautiful, livable and resilient in the face of our changing environmental climate, Lyn is taking a novel approach and publishing her findings and stories from people most affected in real-time.

From Climate Distress to Climate Action
Mind & Life Institute/Inspiring Minds
January 18, 2022

Raging forest fires, record floods, and persistent drought have driven home the reality of the climate crisis, fueling rising rates of anxiety and depression. What steps can we take to embrace uncertainty, deepen appreciation, nurture altruism, and speak out to injustice? What practices can help us build resilience and strengthen our resolve to tackle the crisis? Join a conversation with a leading stress scientist and a teacher of the Bon Tibetan religious tradition as they explore ways of connecting with nature and one another, and strategies for building collective efficacy in the fight against climate change. Topics include contemplative practices that help build resilience so that we can act from a place of calm awareness instead of fear and research related to the science of behavior change and the role individuals can play in influencing larger systems to adopt climate-friendly practices.
