Happy Earth Day!

Tara C. Trapani

In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, we wanted to share some words (and sounds!) of hope and inspiration.

First, check out Orion's 2020 Earth Day feature. They asked 10 authors–including E.O. Wilson, Krista Tippett, and Amy Tan–what brought them hope on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The resulting answers are philosophical, practical, poetic, and deeply personal.

Next, we wanted to share the video of Mary Evelyn Tucker's inspiring 2021 Earth Day sermon: “The Sacred Continuity of Cosmos, Earth, and Humans: An Invitation into Deep Time.”

It's also inspiring to see the map here on the offical Earth Day site that shows the thousands of events going on all over the world this week to raise awareness.

And don't forget to register for the next Yale/Orion online event taking place on April 26. The first two were very inspiring! In this next one, Alison Hawthorne Deming (Zoologies: Animals and the Human Spirit) and Kathleen Dean Moore (Earth's Wild Music: Celebrating and Defending the Songs of the Natural World) will be in conversation, with Mary Evelyn Tucker moderating. Here are the recordings of the first two talks in the series to hold you over until 4/26:

And last, but certainly not least, what gives me the greatest hope is nature itself–the sound of the glorious tiny spring peepers as they herald the return of the green and growth. I hope they bring you as much joy!

Get outside tomorrow, if you can, and connect with the Earth all around you. Happy Earth Day to all!
