CNY college professor awarded MacArthur ‘genius grant’ for Indigenous ecological studies

Syracuse area professor Robin Wall Kimmerer is one of this year’s MacArthur “genius grant” recipients.

The ecologist and author of “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants,” was named one of the 25 MacArthur fellows on Wednesday. She will receive $800,000 in grant money over the next five years.

Kimmerer is currently a distinguished teaching professor at State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF), and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.
