On Saturday, March 11th, as a prelude to the Vernal Equinox, the Paul Winter Consort will present “A Festival of Spring” in the beautiful chapel of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. In the tradition of the multifaceted seasonal celebrations, they have presented for many years at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the Consort will be collaborating with an array of kindred musicians, including the 25-member Trinity Samba ensemble, the 25 voices of the Trinity College Chapel Singers, organist Christopher Houlihan, and percussionist Eric Galm. The Consort will feature vocalist Theresa Thomason, Brazilian pianist Henrique Eisenmann, cellist Eugene Friesen, Bulgarian bassist Peter Slavov, Brazillian drummer Rogério Bocatto, and Paul Winter will be playing the soprano sax. This concert is in the context of music of the “New World”—music born of the convergence, respectively in Brazil and America, of African and European traditions. Though what came forth in each of our countries was different—samba in Brazil and Jazz in the United States—there is great kinship between these genres. This concert will be an interweave of both.
Admission to the concert is free.
