Summary of Activity

Ecomasjid or environmentally friendly mosques is a faith-based organization centered on human development promoting humanitarian collaboration through environment and climate change work. The project primarily promotes Islamic teaching and the duty of individuals to protect the earth. This was done through mosques where the people congregate not only for praying but also for education and social activities.

Impact

This project has reached 6,005 registered study participants and 564 volunteers, with over 200 registered Eco-Mosque communities.

Background

In September 2020, UNEP’s Faith for Earth Initiative, the Parliament of the World’s Religions, United Religions Initiative, and Bhumi Global published a report to celebrate the five year anniversary of the UN Sustainability Development Goals. The report featured data they had collected on faith-based organizations around the world doing work that fell within the scope of the environmental SDGs.

Only a fraction of the collected data was used in the written report, so these organizations partnered with the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology to bring the complete information to the public here on this site as a living, evolving, searchable database. Additional organizations and projects are added on a quarterly basis. This listing is not meant to be a comprehensive overview of any group’s activities, but rather the progress of specific projects towards the environmental SDGs. For more information on a group or a project, visit their website using the links provided on the individual project page.
