Summary of Activity

Congregation Kolot Chayeinu in Brooklyn removed its savings from JPMorgan Chase in 2018. This made the congregation the first U.S. synagogue to publicly divest in opposition to the funding of fossil fuels.

Impact

The move is significant because Chase has lent $196 billion USD to the fossil-fuel industry in the last three years, including the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline.

Background

In September 2020, UNEP’s Faith for Earth Initiative, the Parliament of the World’s Religions, United Religions Initiative, and Bhumi Global published a report to celebrate the five year anniversary of the UN Sustainability Development Goals. The report featured data they had collected on faith-based organizations around the world doing work that fell within the scope of the environmental SDGs.

Only a fraction of the collected data was used in the written report, so these organizations partnered with the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology to bring the complete information to the public here on this site as a living, evolving, searchable database. Additional organizations and projects are added on a quarterly basis. This listing is not meant to be a comprehensive overview of any group’s activities, but rather the progress of specific projects towards the environmental SDGs. For more information on a group or a project, visit their website using the links provided on the individual project page.
