Bioneers Newsletter: A Summer Soundtrack for the Revolution

Movements for social change have nearly always had a soundtrack. Music can give voice to the urgency of a moment, carry stories and ideas farther than words alone, and help people imagine — and fight for — a different future.

Across generations and movements, musicians have put their art in service of that work: from the class-solidarity songs of the early labor movement and Bella Ciao, the Italian anti-fascist anthem Raj Patel invoked at this year’s Bioneers Conference, to the freedom songs of the Civil Rights Movement, the folk music of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, Bob Marley’s conscious reggae, and the politically charged hip-hop of Public Enemy and others.

That tradition has always felt at home at Bioneers. For decades, art and music have been woven into our gatherings alongside ideas, activism, and movement-building. Our stages have welcomed extraordinary musicians working across genres and traditions, each bringing their own voice to the larger work of cultural and social transformation.

So, for a little summer inspiration, we’re turning this issue of The Pulse over to the music. Below, we’re sharing performances from some of the remarkable artists who have joined us at Bioneers Conferences in recent years.
