Glastonbury Abbey’s Listening to Other Voices Lecture Series
For over 66 years, Glastonbury Abbey, a community of Benedictine monks in Hingham, has been a spiritual resource for lifelong learning.
One of the Abbey’s most notable programs is the Listening to Other Voices lecture series. It was created in 1999 to bring speakers to the Abbey from diverse religious traditions to discuss vital, topical issues. The goal of the program is to encourage all to listen with your heart, learn from the religions of others and integrate what you learn into your own faith – in the hopes that we can learn about and work together to solve some of our country’s most pressing problems.
The theme of this year’s Listening to Other Voices lecture series – “We All Live in the Same House: A Faith Response to Climate Change” – focuses on our environmental emergency. The future of our earth is in crisis! Many seem asleep to this reality. Many feel uncertain about what they can do. So this year, we are listening to people of varied religious traditions sharing their insights on what we need to know and how we can help our environment.
The lecture series continues on April 15, 2021, 7:00 p.m. with Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim, Co-Directors of Yale Forum of Religion and Ecology, “The Cry of the Earth, the Cry of the Poor.” Pope Francis challenges us to care for our world and insists that the environment needs to include the whole Earth community - both people and the planet. He has woven teachings from scripture and tradition to elevate these perspectives. Our speakers will discuss Pope Francis’ approach, highlighting “ecojustice” where the concerns of the poor and vulnerable are linked to environmental degradation and exploitation.
