Article/Chapter Title:Toward an Ecological Consciousness
Journal Title:The American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences
Author(s):Agwan, A.R.
Date of Publication:1993
Issue:no. 2
Annotation:Remarking that environmental imbalances are the fruit of irreverential human behavior, Agwan draws on both Eastern and Western religious traditions to illustrate their contribution to new trends in ecological realism such as Deep Ecology. Referring to the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit (1992), he offers the Islamic doctrine of tawhid (unity of life) as an Islamic contribution to current discussions on preservation, scientific inquiry, holism, principles of reciprocity in developmental practices, decentralization of authority, eco-ethics, and self-discipline.
