Annotation:A collection of twelve essays which draw on the authors’ field research conducted in 1965–1966 and 1970–1971, the Anderson’s address the management and adaptation of the Cantonese in south coastal China to their changing landscapes. They begin with essays on food production and its related social forms and continue with topics such as food consumption, the relation of symbolic systems of land management, changing patterns of land use, traditional aquaculture, lineage atrophy, folk medicine, feng-shui, religion in the agricultural landscape, and the dietary strategy of minimax.
