Book Title:Thinking like a Mountain: Toward a Council of all Beings
Article/Chapter Title:Self-Realization: An Ecological Approach to Being in the World
Editor(s):Seed, John
Author(s):Naess, Arne
Publisher Name:New Society Publishers
Place of Publication:Philadelphia, Pa.
Date of Publication:1988
Annotation:Using Gandhi’s conception of atman (the universal Self) as an example, Naess introduces his concept of the ecological Self as the basis for a new kind of environmentalism. Compared to moralistic forms of environmentalism that rely on judgment and prescription, expanding the notion of the Self to include the natural world would easily foster greater care and compassion for the environment because it is part of one’s “Self.”
