Book Title:Green Imperialism
Author(s):Grove, Richard
Publisher Name:Cambridge University Press
Place of Publication:Cambridge
Date of Publication:1995
Annotation:Grove examines the relationship between environmentalism and colonialism, and argues that concern for the environment on a global scale emerged out of the experience of European colonialism in the tropics between 1600–1860. Influenced by non-European epistemologies of nature and the negative effects of capitalist colonialism, colonial physicians and scientists were able to anticipate contemporary ecological crises. Grove argues that the theories and stewardship models they generated in response formed the basis of modern, Western environmentalism.
