Article/Chapter Title:New Directions in Environmental Sociology
Journal Title:Annual Review of Sociology
Author(s):Buttel, Frederick H
Date of Publication:1987
Annotation:In this informative overview, Buttel argues that sub-discipline of environmental sociology has strayed from its initial goal of fundamentally reorienting the field of sociology, which is characterized by specialization, fragmentation, and dualism. Claiming that environmental sociology has become routinized and conformist since its emergence in the 1970s, he suggests that it might benefit from engaging with other sub-disciplines, particularly the sociology of development.
