Book Title:The Social Life of Things: Commodities in Cultural Perspective
Article/Chapter Title:Introduction: Commodities and the Politics of Value
Editor(s):Appadurai, Arjun
Author(s):Appadurai, Arjun
Publisher Name:Cambridge University Press
Place of Publication:Cambridge
Date of Publication:1986
Annotation:In this introduction to the edited volume on the exchange, circulation, and valuation of things, Appadurai presents a new understanding of the political links between the exchange and value by tracing the movements or “social lives” of objects through different “regimes of value”. Contending that commodities reflect different forms of knowledge, social arrangements, and political processes, he argues that tracing an object’s “career” reveals that knowledge about commodities tends to become more fragmented and contradictory the farther it travels.
