Annotation:The introductory essay to this edited volume contextualizes the other contributing essays within the broader realm of environmental philosophy and activism. Problematizing the “myth of Western dominance of nature” and the “counter-myth of a prevailing Asian ecology-mindedness,” this essay illustrates the cross-cultural significance of the concept of nature, natural metaphors, and the moral order that binds humans to the environment. The editors suggest that Western environmental realities can no longer be compared with Eastern ideals.
