Book Title:Japanese Images of Nature: Cultural Perspectives
Article/Chapter Title:Watsuji Tetsuro's Ecological Approach: Its Philosophical Foundation
Author(s):Befu, Harumi
Publisher Name:Curzon Press
Place of Publication:Surrey
Date of Publication:1997
Annotation:In this essay, Harumi analyzes Watsuji Tetsuro’s seminal work, Fudo-Ningengaku-teki Koatsu (1935, trans. Climate and Culture) in terms of his philosophical argumentation utilizing Thomas P. Kasulis’ concept of “we-philosophy.” Acknowledging the cultural nationalism clearly evident in this work and the weakness of a solid methodology, Harumi remarks on its comprehensiveness, broad conceptualization of climate and environment, and its philosophical grounding for contemporary environmental thought.
