Rainer Maria Rilke and the Force of the Storm (Retreat with Joanna Macy)

Event description:

September 19-23, 2016

Garrison Institute
Garrison, NY, USA

Our friends at the Garrison Institute are hosting an East Coast retreat with Joanna Macy, a deeply beloved Buddhist scholar, environmental activist, and author.

As our situation on the planet grows more uncertain, it is increasingly vital to get in touch with our basic gratitude for being alive. A primal sense of wonder and awe keeps us grounded so that we can also look at the pain we feel for our world. This is the message at the heart of Macy’s Work that Reconnects.

In this retreat, “Rainer Maria Rilke and the Force of the Storm,” Macy will be joined by prize-winning poet and clinical psychologist Anita Barrows to explore the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, one of Germany’s great lyric poets. Together, they will bring Rilke to life for us through his poetry and personal narrative. Macy and Barrows will draw from Buddhist teachings, systems theory, and the deep ecological vision of poets like Rilke to help us face the perils and promise of our own global moment.

The Garrison Institute is located in Garrison, New York in a former Capuchin monastery overlooking the Hudson River, approximately 50 miles north of New York City. It is a place of refuge where you can withdraw from the business of your daily life. Accommodations are simple and quiet with enough space to breathe, rest, and meditate. The tranquil, park-like setting, the gardens, the gazebo on a bluff by the river, and the many walking paths create a natural setting for this special retreat.
