Paul Winter’s 37th Annual Winter Solstice Celebration

Event description:

Seven-time Grammy®-winning saxophonist Paul Winter presents his 37th Annual Winter Solstice Celebration, a dazzling extravaganza of music and dance within the awesome visuals and titanic acoustics of the world’s largest cathedral. This year’s event ventures into the classic rock realm with special guest Gary Brooker, vocalist and pianist of the iconic band Procol Harum, best known for the classic song “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” Also featured are gospel singer Theresa Thomason, the 25 unbridled, exuberant dancers and drummers Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, and the 7 musicians of the Paul Winter Consort. The show is a tribute to the late Sir George Martin, renowned producer of the Beatles’ recordings, who also produced the Paul Winter Consort’s landmark album Icarus, which Martin described as “the finest record I have ever made.”

Spectacular theatrical elements include a spiral tree of sounds and the world’s largest sun gong rising 125 feet for the symbolic moment of sunrise. The Winter Solstice Celebration offers a contemporary take on the age-old calling to come together on the longest night of the year, to welcome the return of the sun and the birth of the new year.

Performances on Thursday, December 15 at 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 16 at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, December 17 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street, Manhattan.
