The ocean is an incredible gift. It supports hundreds of millions of people’s livelihoods and is home to irreplaceable biodiversity. It is one of earth’s most awesome features.

And it is at risk.

GreenFaith and Trinity Institute invite you to a half-day briefing entitled Our Sacred Ocean in Washington DC at American University on Wednesday, September 14.

The briefing comes just a day before high-level officials from governments around the world meet with Secretary of State John Kerry for the annual Our Ocean conference, taking place this year in Washington.

Our Sacred Ocean will feature:
•    Theologian Jame Schaefer, PhD., of Marquette University, presenting “Hope for the Imperiled Oceans—Theological and Ethical Perspectives of the World Religions”
•    Dr. Vaughn Turekian, Science and Technology Advisor to US Secretary of State John Kerry

Participants will learn about the health of and threats facing the ocean, religious teachings in support of ocean protection and care, and opportunities for advocacy.

A short video with highlights, and related materials, will be freely available after the briefing.

Our Sacred Ocean is the first in a series of events leading up to the March 2017 Trinity Institute conference entitled Water Justice, which will explore issues of fresh water and oceans, and which will support faith-based engagement on this vital topic.
