Vandana Shiva, founder of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Ecology in India, will give the Bartlett Lecture at Yale Divinity School on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. Dr. Shiva’s lecture, “Earth Democracy: Peace with the Earth, Justice for All,” will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Old Refectory, with a reception to follow.

Vandana Shiva is an author, activist, educator, scientific adviser, and mother who combines sharp intellectual inquiry with courageous activism. In addition to her work with her research foundation, she is a founder and leader of Navdanya, a movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources—especially native seed—and to promote organic farming and fair trade in India. Dr. Shiva’s contributions to gender equity, including her book Staying Alive, are internationally recognized.

Shiva trained as a physicist at the University of Punjab and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Western Ontario. She later shifted to interdisciplinary research in science, technology, and environmental policy.

Dr. Shiva is the recipient of countless awards, including the Right Livelihood Award (also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”) in 1993, and honorary doctorates from multiple institutions. Time magazine has dubbed her an environmental “hero,” and Forbes has named her one of the Seven Most Powerful Feminists on the Globe.

The Bartlett Lectureship was created in 1986 with a gift from the Rev. Robert M. Bartlett ’24 B.D. and his wife, Sue Bartlett. The lectureship is dedicated to fostering knowledge and appreciation of the pilgrims of Plymouth Colony and their contribution to the religious, intellectual, and political life of America; to encouraging understanding of the history and culture of modern China; and to addressing democracy, human rights, and world peace.

The 2018 Bartlett Lecture is open to the public and will be broadcast live on the YDS Livestream page. A video will be available after the event on the Divinity School YouTube channel.
