Event description:
One-of-a-kind Intimate Sunrise Concert Will Welcome the Dawn of Summer
The Paul Winter Consort will celebrate the dawning of the summer during the 18 th annual Summer Solstice concert on Saturday, June 22 at 4:30 AM – 6:30 AM, at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112 th Street, Manhattan.
Beginning in the pre-dawn darkness in the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, the Grammy®-winning ensemble, the Paul Winter Consort, will surround the audience and play continuously for two hours as the morning sun gradually illuminates the stained-glass windows of the Cathedral.
The event this year will feature a new stage set and audience configuration. The audience will be seated in concentric circles under the great dome, surrounded by the musicians and a galaxy of percussion, including nine large Balinese gamelan gongs, whose deep, resonant tones will evoke the orbit of the earth around the sun. This unique and dynamic setting reverses traditional concert norms by having the audience on the inside with the musicians surrounding them, allowing the audience to face and enjoy the stained-glass windows as they burst with color from the morning light.
Led by Paul Winter on soprano sax, musicians Eugene Friesen, cello; John Clark, French horn; Marcus Rojas, tuba; Tim Brumfield, organ; and multiple percussionists will take advantage of the Cathedral’s unique acoustics to powerfully welcome the summer.
All are invited to a tea and coffee reception following the concert.
Tickets are available for $35. For more information or to purchase tickets please visit http://www.stjohndivine.org/Solstice2013.html.
